California Breathing, a program of the California Department of Public Health's Environmental Health Investigations Branch, aims to reduce the burden of asthma in California and improve environmental conditions that affect people with asthma. Our purpose is to advance strategies outlined in the just released Strategic Plan for Asthma in California 2008-2012.  To learn more about asthma in California, download, The Burden of Asthma in California: A Surveillance Report.  

News 

  • California Breathing is proud to announce the recipients of the 2008-2009 Strategic Plan Implementation Grants. Click here for the press release. 
  • Save the Date!  California Breathing and the American Asthma Foundation are hosting an Asthma Research Summit on December 10th and 11th in San Francisco. More information and registration materials will be coming soon.
  • Reducing the impact asthma has on the lives of Californians is a high priority; Governor Schwarzenegger has proclaimed May 2008 to be Asthma Awareness Month in California.

California Wildfires

  • Air quality in many communities across California is poor due to the current wildfires. People with asthma and other lung diseases are especially sensitive to the wildfire smoke and should take precautions to limit their exposure to the smoky air.  The California Department of Public Health has revised Wildfire Smoke: A Guide for Public Health Officials, a resource for local health departments.  More information...
