2010 AIR Health Awards-Recipient Schools

In recognition of National Health Schools Day on April 26, 2010, California Breathing announced the names of schools that received the 2nd Annual AIR (Achievements in Respiratory) Health Awards for implementing strategies that made their school environments healthier for students and staff with asthma.

To be eligible for the award, schools must have instituted air quality improvement efforts that address asthma-causing cleaning supplies, pesticide use, classroom pets, and maintenance problems.  Additionally, the schools must demonstrated enforcement of state regulations reducing bus idling near schools, and banning smoking on school property.

There are three award levels:

Distinguished Achievement: for schools and school districts that exceeded the criteria by involving the entire school and/or school district, from the principals to the school staff and students in identifying and reducing asthma triggers on school grounds, often in innovative ways, and serving as role models for other schools and school districts.

Award of Excellence: for schools that fully met the awards criteria and exhibited a commitment to improving air quality throughout the school.

Award of Achievement: for schools that have made significant improvements in air quality at the school.

Fifteen schools and one school district received awards.
